The Long awaited “Superheroes:Fashion and Fantasy” opens today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The show, which runs through September 1, 2008, takes a fun look at the influence of the comic book superhero as a social metaphor of our times and explores how these iconic characters have influenced modern day fashion.
Pieces from the 2006 Moschino and Bernhard Willhelm collections are included in this “super” exhibition.
Monday night’s star studded Gala, which is held every Spring to usher in the Costume Institute’s Summer exhibition, is always one of my favorite fashion events. It’s the one big ticket night the stars usually let loose, play favorites with designers ( usually because that particular designer also happens to be their date ), and push the fashion envelope just a bit.
This year some stars did just that, letting the colors and personas of some our favorite Comic book heroes help style them for the evening…. or at least that’s how I see it… what do you think?
Tom Cruise made good on Oprah, and Katie impressed me with having some fun with her look. Her bright red vintage Armani dress complete with “superhero” blue shoes showed real personality.
Posh’s poses on the red carpet normally make me giggle, her slinky dress ( also vintage Armani ) and posture though at this particular event screamed out “Catwoman!”- which is what I’m sure she was going for, right?
Christian Ricci hit on both the transparency trend and the superhero as stylist theme in this Givency gown- maybe the golden lasso is in her purse.
The “devil” wears Chanel… Vogue editor Anna Wintour wearing Chanel Haute Couture in true Hulk fashion…. at least she won’t get hurt if someone bumps into her on the carpet.
Naomi Watts, Stella McCartney and Kate Moss also had a little fun with the night channeling their inner- “Isis”….. Stella I’m loving the superhero blue!
If you’re in NYC this summer make it a point to check out the show- if not the online synopsis is fantastic and the exhibit’s companion book is sure to “Holy colorful!, Batman!”

Christina Ricci looks so goregeous ! I also just saw a picture of cute musical genius Jack White and his lucky wife Karen Ellison at the gala.
I’m going tomorrow so I’ll be sure to keep you posted on the exhibit.
