Color In Films: Last Days

Last Days explores the final days of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Writer and director Gus Van Sant truly examines the feeling of isolation in the world with this film. From beginning to end, the darker more rustic tones of nature set the stage for sadness, weakness and the psychological sense of strength that is showcased at the end of the film when the character takes his own life. The rich colors of the cooler seasons embrace the story as it unfolds to its realistic and haunting finale.

Color In Films: One Hour Photo

One Hour Photo is a psychological look into obsession. The film’s main character, Sy, works at a one hour photo lab in a large department store and begins to become infatuated with a family who gets their photos developed there. Due to his quiet, lonely life, he finds himself getting involved with family issues to protect the wife of the family.

What starts off as a caring gesture becomes a haunting and deadly situation. The clinical feel of the film with its bright whites and cold blues allows to viewer to feel the numbness you can imagine Sy feels while at the same time feeling discomfort from the events that unfold.

Color in Films: Blue Valentine

Blue Valentine is a film about love and how time can change a person. The couple who the film focuses on fell in love at a young age and then got married and had a child. As they get older, the woman slowly grew apart from her husband while he grew to love her more. It’s a sad story that is told through a muted and neutral palette which really help set the tone for the cold and distant feeling that is being felt by the characters.

Discover The Hidden Messages Of Color In A Gift of Roses

Flowers have helped us convey our feelings for centuries and their colors play a big part in that. Roses are one of the most popular types of flower and being that they come in various colors and varieties, there is so much one can say when handing over a rose.

Two pictures of roses with the color palette below

White roses are one of the oldest varieties and are considered a classic flower as well as modern. They symbolize purity, innocence and loyalty, which is why they are greatly used in weddings and other religious ceremonies.

Traditionally, yellow roses are a symbol of friendship and happiness. According to Rose Magazine, they are considered an ancient flower and weren’t popular until the 1700s. A bunch of yellow roses are perfect to send to a newly engaged couple, a sick friend or a loved one you are welcoming back home.

The most mystical rose, lavender speaks of royalty and opulence and can very well be used to express love at first sight while black roses, actually dark red, symbolize death and rebirth.
