If you think New York City’s skyline is impressive- wait to you get an eyeful of it’s East River.
Starting this Thursday, the river that runs up and down the east side of Manhattan with become a “flowing” work of art.

Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, known for his atmospheric art installations, has created the largest work of public art to hit NYC since Christo installed his “Gates” through Central Park back in 2006.

an artist rendition shows what New Yorkers will be seeing starting at 7am Thursday morning.
The project, which will feature 4 cascading man made waterfalls and was privately funded through the help of The Public Art Fund, is expected to raise millions of dollars in tourism revenue for the Big Apple. Hotels are offering special packages to visit during the exhibit and the city’s most famous tour companies- like the Circle Line boats- will be offering special tours of the most spectacular views.
I can’t wait to see this in person!
“Take Your Time” installation
Also- If you are in the New York area in the next week or so check out Eliasson’s “Take Your Time” exhibit at the MOMA’s contemporary space PS 1-where he uses mirrors and lights to change your perspective of space-it looks so cool, but you have to hurry it end on June 30th.
The waterfalls will be in place on the eastern foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, at Pier 35, between Piers 4 and 5 off of Brooklyn Heights and on the north shore of Governor’s Island. The exhibit will run from June 26 through October 13th.
Many of Eliasson’s pieces are created by using colored lights- the waterfalls will be lite at night… so it should be interesting to see what colors he uses- I’ll keep you posted.
