Color and style: Grammys 2008

The 2008 Grammys, which was celebrated last night in Los Angeles, was as usual quite a colorful event. After all, the Grammys are the one mega award show you expect to see artist wearing outfits that reflect their attitude and personality and not so much the latest runway trend.
While some stars came through, a.k.a Cher, Amy Winehouse, Cyndi Lauper, Prince to name a few- all whose “head scratching” ensembles could only have been chosen and worn by no other one but themselves- the majority of others took a surprisingly more conservative path.
In fact I was almost as shocked as Amy Winehouse was when her name was called for “Album of the Year”, at how demure and timely so many of these music powerhouses looked coming down the red carpet.

Colbie Caillet, Nelly Furtado, Corrine Baily Rae, Natasha Bedingfield- all pretty and bright
Then as the show continued, I realized that unlike the Golden Globes or the Oscars, these performing stars get costume changes. So most of these smart cookies took the opportunity to look picture pretty on the carpet, only later to appear in more rebellious looks on stage.
Prior to those performances, the most noteworthy color and style trend of the night for the ladies had to be bright jewel tones, matching colorful make-up, cleaner dos and lots of toned shoulder baring style. So optimistically bright- they appeared like a parade of spring nymphs coming down the red carpet.
I have to admit- the ones I liked, I really liked. I also have to admit (slightly embarrassingly) that Taylor Swift’s purple dress and matching eye makeup already has me planning out my next trip to Sephora! I’m praying the look works as well on those of us who like me are 18 years old only in spirit.

Rihanna and Taylor- it doesn’t get much younger or cuter then this!

Beyonce channeled Cinderella on the carpet and icon Tina Turner on stage

Fergie looked grown-up and Sophisticated in a gown from Calvin Klein, and followed it up with an equally sexy look while performing with John Legend
Carrie Underwood was one of the few who choose to follow this Springs sheer floral trend, which I think may not have seemed so overpowering if she had worn her hair pulled back. The big country hair however seemed to work for her rock/honky tonk look on stage.
Alicia Keys looked super demure in this blue gown though she did show some personality in her faux-hawk updo. On stage with John Mayer she went the route of sparkles, leather and choose to wear a pair of earrings so big that they made me wonder how she was able to move her head.

Rihanna looked so cute in this Zac Posen dress I have to show her again! She must have been equally pleased with the way she looked, as she choose a dress in a similiar length and theme for her on stage look.
The best dressed men of the night (or at least those who made it a point not to show up in grubby jeans- Dave Grohl I adore you, but you could have at least found a clean pair!) choose a classic black and white palette.
Jay Z in a Tom Ford tuxedo- it most definitely does not get cooler than this!
Seal has got to be the only man on the planet who could make all white and a thin black tie look sophisticated.
While my hopes are that Ludacris’s impeccable style
in a perfectly tailored head to toe Armani…will rub off on some of his less motivated contemporaries
So who do you think wore the best looks of the night?

Like you Julie, I think Taylor Swift looked sensational! Not only is she an incredible singer/songwriter at such a young age but also seems to have it going on from a fashion perspective.
