There is something so kinetic about 2 holidays falling on the same day, don’t you think?

The ruckus of the Chinese New Year’s celebration coupled with the most famous day of amour- lends itself to a real East meets West kind of day.

I had been in fact very excited at the prospect of 2010 being the year of the White (metal) Tiger. Last year’s Brown (Earth) Ox sounded sluggish to me from day one, the tiger seems so much more exciting and sleek. Finally I thought, some action.

Then I made the big mistake of going onto this site and reading my personal New Year’s horoscope (based on my birth date, time and location). It appears as if-at least for me- Mr. White Tiger will be a carnivorous beast, not the sweet kitty I had hoped for.

“Really?” ‘What exactly have I ever done to you Chinese Horoscope site?!” (FYI- don’t even get me started on the facial mole reading).

So with this new found discovery in mind I’m hoping Cupid’s arrow will pierce the steely tiger’s heart and we all can catch a break this year. (I know we all deserve it!)

To loosen up all parties involved – a festive cocktail is in order.

So I asked my friend Colleen Mullaney- author of It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere for a few yummy suggestions. With the holidays in mind, I’m thinking this one might fit the bill. Perfectly delicious, romantic and right on colorful track.

The golden color of the champagne will symbolized good luck, the blush color of the cointreau- true love and the orange peel-strong wealth.

Bottoms up Tiger! xo

Oh, and if you’re interested in what colors represent your animal birth sign- Check out this post I wrote last year-when I obviously had a whole lot more time on my hands! Kisses!

Before I step one more foot into 2010, I figured I’d have a go at rounding up the colorful events, people and well-colors that shaped this past year. There were plenty of highlights, a few too many lows if you asked me and some media sensations that simply made you wonder “Do we all really have this much time on our hands?”

The year started out with the most miraculous feat in aviation since the Wright Brothers and ended with an equally heroic act in midair. We said hello to our first African-American President and good bye to our most famous African-American celebrity. We were entranced by some fictional monsters and duped by some real life ones.

From TMZ to Tea Parties to Tami Flu; Celebrity infidelities, reality star wannabes behaving badly, health care reform, H1N1 and the unemployment rate all left a bitter taste in our mouths. Luckily the cupcake craze came along and gave us a rush of sweet as we ‘tweet-ed’ our every movement and ‘friend-ed’ everyone we’ve known since 3rd grade.

The idea of beautiful was turned upside down as a spinster opening her mouth spun gold and a beauty queen opening her’s spun only controversy. Shoes that defied gravity, charcoal lipstick and Jade green polish gave fashion an extra edge- but even they failed to excited us even half as much as what Lady Gaga wore on her laundry day.

Michelle donned Lemongrass and revamped the White House, purples and grays colored our hip homes while vibrant reds and rich emerald lent a pop of color to fashion’s otherwise trend of dusty, blush-like hues.

Going Green gained momentum as we cashed in our gas guzzling clunkers and fought rising heating cost wrapped in our Snuggies. Stimulus plans were set to plant the seeds of new beginnings, while the darkness and casualties of war left us all struggling to find an end in sight- my, oh my -if only there were ‘an App for that!”

2009-a colorful year indeed…

Happy New Year! May 2010 be filled with colorful joy, good health and peace for us all!

If I say “Christmas colors” I bet red and green instantly come to mind but have you ever wondered how these two colors came to represent our most celebrated holiday?

Like any longstanding tradition there are enough stories about its origins to keep a cultural anthropologist busy for a long time but I have a few favorite theories that come complete with the color and controversy that makes any tale worth retelling.

SPRIGS OF HOLLY

Some think that it all began with the shiny green leaves and bright red berries of a sprig of holly. A good thought since red and green are the only bright colors that seem to survive in nature when temperatures plummet but this isn’t why we link it to Christmas.

The Roman’s celebrated Saturnalia a December festival that honored the god Saturn and preceded the celebrating of Christmas. During the Saturnalia festival holly wreaths were given as gifts.

It has been said that in the 4th century leaders in the Catholic Church came up with the idea to celebrate Christmas on December 25 in order to outdo the Saturnalia festivities of the pagan religion that at the time threatened Christianity’s existence. Even though it is thought that Christ birth actually took place during the spring the December date was chosen to celebrate the birth of Christ and to compete with the rival festival.

Sounds like a modern day battle of brands rather than the origins of a religious holiday doesn’t it? Of course if you are going to usurp the holiday why not take over the symbols, too and give them some deeper, and of course religious meanings.

It is said that only the holly tree consented to be cut down and its wood made into a cross to bear Jesus. Some Christians believe that Jesus wore a crown of holly thorns whose berries were originally white. As Jesus’ blood touched the berries, they turned red. The green leaves of the holly plant have come to represent everlasting life and the berries the blood of Jesus. –BBC Religion, Christmas Traditions

Years later church fathers also gave a nod to Holly as a decoration to replace mistletoe. What? I love mistletoe. Why would anyone want to replace mistletoe?
Back to religious leaders and their desire to squelch pagan beliefs. About two hundred years before the birth of Christ mistletoe was used by the Druids to celebrate the coming of winter. When congregation members began using mistletoe as Christmas decoration,,,you guessed it. This would never do so church fathers suggested that sprigs of holly would be a more appropriate adornment and suitable replacement for mistletoe.

And here my first though was that they didn’t like mistletoe because it allowed you to surprise anyone standing beneath it with a big kiss. Silly me!

POINTSETTIAS

Many think that the tradition of red and green started with the poinsettia plant but that didn’t become a symbol of Christmas until much more recently. Recent at least when you look at the big timeline of all human history.

The poinsettia is native to Mexico where its yellow flower surrounded by bright red leaves (yep the flower is the small yellow center and the red many think of as the blossom are actually the top leaves) is symbolic of the star of Bethlehem.

The plant along with its Christmas symbolism was first introduced to America in 1828 by America’s first ambassador to Mexico Joel Poinsett who the popular plant was named after. Hmm, how do you get to have a plant named after you? I’m sure there is more to that story but that could take me way off track and I have presents to open.

Anyway poinsettias may be considered the flower of Christmas but they aren’t the reason we think red and green.

PINE GREEN & APPLE RED

I think the most likely root of the red and green tradition dates back to the 1300s when Adam and Eve’s Day was celebrated on December 24th. Each year on this day churches traditionally presented a Paradise Play depicting the story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden.

Now you can’t have a story about Adam and Eve without an apple tree but since it wasn’t easy to find a real tree full of ripe, red apples during the winter apples someone came up with the idea of fastening apples to the branches of a pine tree. This decorated pine tree represented the Tree of Good and Evil. But the tree wasn’t only seen in the play. Churches began adding a tree donning red apples into their Christmas displays.

The decorated tree that began as a prop for the Paradise play was so popular especially in Germany, that people began to put pine trees up in their homes during the holiday, decorating them with red apples, as the church folks had done and the tradition of having a Christmas treee was born.

The idea spread and both Christmas trees and the color combination of red and green were well on its way to becoming official symbols of the Christmas holiday.

Have a very Merry Christmas!

You see I have this belief that those people many consider techies (and maybe even a bit nerdy) are going to rule the world.

Maybe we won’t see them in top positions (most of them prefer to tinker behind the scenes) but when anything significant happens you can be sure they will not only be involved but will be the ones that have the ability and resources to develop solutions while many stand around scratching their heads. If you don’t believe just take a look at how well they fared in the DARPA challenge.

From a site sponsored and hosted by the Georgia Tech Research Institute Atlanta, GA

The Idea: DARPA staged a competition to mark the 40th anniversary of the Internet and to explore the roles the Internet and social networking play in the timely communication, wide-area team-building, and urgent mobilization required to solve broad-scope, time-critical problems.

The Challenge: To be the first to submit the locations of 10 moored, 8-foot, red, weather balloons at 10 fixed locations in the continental United States. And, no they weren’t in some remote areas or hidden in any way. All of the balloons were placed in easily accessible locations and visible from nearby roads.

Johanna Jones, a spokeswoman for the military’s DARPA, said the hunt is designed in part to give the military new ideas on ways to operate in a range of situations, from natural disasters to combat.

“It’s an opportunity to reach out to groups that are very comfortable with social networking,” she said. “Reaching out to some of these groups, they may actually come up with some great ideas for the future.”

It seems DARPA may not been aware of this awesome ‘nerd power’ when it staged this competition. Although they were given up to a week to turn in their answers, the winning team found the locations of all ten red balloons in only 9 hours. Never underestimate the competitive nature and resourcefulness of a group of talented techies.

The Winners: MIT’s Riley Crane only found out about DARPA’s red balloon challenge a few days before it started. Yet his team went on to win the contest through its savvy use of the Internet.

Team MIT’s strategy was to build a Web site designed to attract more and more followers–people who might know the balloons’ locations themselves and those could bring aboard others who knew the coordinates, essentially creating a chain effect.

Read more about the event on CNN.com and more about the winners.

Pretty amazing, huh? And I bet the $4o,ooo makes the ‘revenge of the nerds’ all that much sweeter. Nicely done MIT Team!

Last year I got a real kick out of the Christmas By Colour poster project put together by the creative folks over at Raw Design Studio.

I loved not only the idea behind the project but the end result and without any hesitation clicked the “Buy” button. The poster quickly found a home in my color studio and while I had planned on wrapping a gift for someone special in the bonus wrapping paper they sent I never could bring myself to use it. Well, maybe this year it will cover a specials gift…or maybe not.

Anyway the Christmas by Colour project is back again this year with a new twist…sets of Christmas cards.

Hooray, twelve in each set so I won’t be torn between keeping or sending this year since I can keep some and send some. Hmm, of course then I wouldn’t have every color so I might just have the same dilemma.

Okay, I’ll admit it. I am a bit obsessed when it comes to cool stuff related to color. But then again you already pointed that out to me when I ordered the subscription to 500 colors and I’m okay with that but I digress.

Luckily for me the sets of Christmas by Colour cards are priced so reasonably that I can buy two sets of each assortment. Yep, one to keep and one to give away. Now that’s a solution that not only makes me happy but I bet will make those on my Christmas card list delighted, too!

Now the only dilemma will be in deciding who gets which color. Of course the fun color names may help me decide.

I think ‘Yellow Snow’ would make my 10 year old nephew laugh, ‘Bank Balance’ could be a wry reminder for my son in college and “Granny’s Whiskers” could go to my mom–Not!! At least not if I want to have her ever speak to me again but you get the idea.

You can see the sets of cards and all of the color names here. I understand there are a few of last year’s posters available, too so go there now and place your order for both so they arrive in time for Christmas.

And if you plan to send me one of the cards I think “Mulled wine” or “Walking in the Air” would be great choices.

For as long as my flustered mind can remember, the fourth Thursday of every November of my life can best be summed up by the following keywords: turkey, pumpkin, stuffing, cranberry, pilgrim, cornucopia, parade and football.

If you were to build a color palette of my collective T-Day memories it would look something like this:

I had to throw in a little Avocado Green since somewhere in my mind’s eye I keep envisioning a packed solid dishwasher in this very descriptive hue of a late 70’s kitchen

source

and oh yeah, every Thanksgiving table of my childhood also included a set of candle just like these (except the girl’s dress was brown)- I guarantee you my mother still has them

This morning I had to wonder. If I were to build a palette to describe the very first Thanksgiving what would it look like? I thought about Puritans, Indians and all things New England. The colors wouldn’t be all that different- I would just have to throw in a few shades of tanned animal skins and a pretty shade of weathered gray to represent Plymouth Rock, right?

Well, not so fast magical Photoshop tools. After delving into a little holiday research, I realized not everyone is in agreement with how this palette would actually have first looked. Let alone who was there and where it was celebrated.

Could the official first feast of ‘thanks’ have been a little more colorful then we were all taught? I’m talking Palm Trees, sunny skies, gulf stream blue, some Spanish bean soup and even a bottle of French wine thrown in- just to ruffle the tail feathers of our Mayflower descendants a bit more.

In order to get these quite different versions of Americana history straight, one would have to head way south of Plymouth Rock to a sunny FLA some 50 odd years before the famous Puritans ever stepped one buckle shoe onto Massachusetts’ rocky coast.

According to his book The Cross In The Sand (first published in 1965), historian Michael Gannon believes that it was upon the sandy beaches of St. Augustine, FLA that the Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles first landed, settled and in true Spanish flair-extended a dinner invite to the local Timucua Indians. Legend has it their fiesta included a feast of bean soup.

Hmm.. not a pilgrim hat in sight

A 2007 USA Today article describes the book and Gannon’s version of the first ‘Thanksgiving’ celebration as going basically unnoticed for about 20 years. It wasn’t until 1985 when an AP reporter picked up on the story and helped bring it to national attention.

At the time Gannon’s clever statement that ” by the time the Pilgrims came to Plymouth, St. Augustine was up for urban renewal” only helped to fuel the historical fire.

So does Conquistador Red need to be added to my historical palette? Perhaps not says Kenneth C. Davis whose book “America’s Hidden History: Untold Tales of the First Pilgrims, Fighting Women and Forgotten Founders Who Shaped a Nation”, tells of yet a different tale. In his story the first Thanksgiving actually took place just outside of what is now Jacksonville, Florida and includes instead a cast of French Huguenots.

In an article last November in The New York Times, Davis weaves the tale of French pilgrims escaping the religious persecution of Europe to find solace in the new world. Upon making land in 1564, the pilgrims threw their own soiree to celebrate the seeds of a new land. Once settled the resourceful bunch were able to build a fort, a mill, a bakery and even produce their own wine (leave it to the French!). It seems as if they had found la dolce vita, that is until the Spanish took it upon themselves to officially “evict’ their new French neighbors (for the lack of nicer words).

So does my color trail now lead me to include the colors of France fashion circa mid 16th century too? Better yet am I truly prepared to rethink the entire image of this holiday?

If only this version could be the end of my palette’s plight. I discover that Plymouth’s famous history has not only some Southerns with their pantaloons all up in a bunch, but a fellow Massachusetts town as well. Thanks to a few Cape ‘Codders’ the mystery grows even more.

It is there in Provincetown that they say the Mayflower first came to shore- six weeks prior to the pilgrims setting sail again and landing at their final destination of Plymouth Rock. Upon these beach-y shores, the settlers signed the Plymouth Compact, discovered corn and traded goods for the first time with Native Americans. Provincetown has spent the last 100 years trying to get this word out-that in fact it was here on Cape Cod that the pilgrims first touched American soil. Yet unless you happen to vacation there, you probably would never ‘thoust hear of thee”.

In 2010 the Pilgrim Monument of Provincetown will celebrate 100 years of earnestly trying to rewrite American history

Geez, I’m starting to think Plymouth Rock just can’t catch a break! So whats to believe?

While I do find these historical accounts incredibly fascinating and I always love a colorful ’shake up’ of ideas, ultimately what I learned in childhood will likely be the way I will continue to think about this day in history.

For me the first Thanksgiving will continue to be a scene set upon a cool New England Autumn afternoon, a table full of the first harvested bounty and the meshing of two distinctly different cultures. In the name of giving thanks to faith, perseverance and friendship.

Of course in my mind it all plays out like a bad made-for-tv movie and includes a scene with a beautiful Indian princess attempting to teach some young studly ‘old English’ speaking pilgrim how to say ‘maize’ while his uptight WASPy parents look nervously on…you know, something like you might see Sela Ward star in on Lifetime.

The figures are in and as we approach the holiday season, the world’s economic state can be summed up by four simple words: “We’re all still broke!”

I could offer up some additional colorful words to describe exactly how I’m feeling about my own personal finances right now- but in the spirit of the season I’m going to play nice (Santa is watching after all).

So with bank accounts lowering and stress levels rising (almost as fast as the prices for food and gas), it’s easy to see how one could lose sight of that ‘giving and thankful spirit’ that this time of year is supposed to be all about.

I’m determined for my own sanity not to let that happen. Whenever I begin to feel stressed out, I vow to take a breath and to remember how truly grateful I am for my family’s health, for the crazy cast of characters I call my friends and for the not quite clean-but always welcoming house that I am fortunate enough to call home.

So with less cash to spend and more gratitude to give, I spent the weekend surfing the net for gift ideas. Products that will bring a smile to those that I love, all while helping to make the world a better place. I figure this way everyone can profit a little from my (not always this thoughtful) spending habits.

Here are a few of my favorites so far- I hope they will inspire you as well!

1. American Flamingo needlepoint pillow from Michaelian Homes ($150)- choose from a variety of beautiful John James Audubon’s bird images licensed directly from the Audubon Society and help support their fight to protect these beautiful creatures.

2. Fair Trade Napali Hand-knit Stocking Cap ($12.95). Super cute and for every cap sold through The Rainforest Site, they will fund the preservation of 1145.0 sq. ft. of land.

3. Lush Hand & Body Creme Charity Pot.

Happy Halloween!

Okay as the countdown begins for the arrival of good spirits (evil ones you are so not invited), I find myself rushing about with the final preparations for my evening’s festivities.

I had a few silly decor ideas and I thought I would quickly share them- then I must run because I’m having all kinds of last minute costume drama! What exactly does one wear to star in Kibuki Theater these days..hum, the hot pink kimono or the black with aqua one?

I always love to do at least one ‘trick’ for the kiddies. A small toy Jack O’Lantern inspired this idea. I can’t wait to see their faces when they discover that even our ‘House Mouse’ wants to celebrate the sweet and spooky holiday!

a faux construction paper hole, a quick felt door mat, a few plums from an ornamental grass wrapped to look like corn husk, my toy pumpkin and a mini- terracotta pot of treats sets the stage for my trickery

Oh man, my House Mouse is way more trusting then I am….

A few days ago I learned about an upcoming show at the MOMA that gave me a great idea for how I could set the table for tonight (best part, it’s the cheapest table setting ever!)

No one does Halloween better than Tim Burton, an upcoming show at NYs Museum of Modern Art pays tribute to his creative, macbre mind.

This Tim Burton drawing gave me the idea. I’m thinking an austere dining room might just be the way to go (aka I’m off the hook for having the pressure of dressing a perfect table!!!)

So I’m clearing out all decorative items from the room. The light fixture that hangs over my table is really just a single bulb once the pretty Fortuny cover is removed so it easily turns into a simple bare bulb hanging from the ceiling. I tested it out-if I slightly loosen the bulb it flickers a bit when you move across the floor. The now cold and bare room is so weird and spooky, I can’t wait!

I really am loving the austere idea, but I can’t resist having fresh flowers when I entertain. So I really tried to figure out what I could do that would be quick, easy and cost basically nothing. I do have lots of interesting things I could pick from my yard. My butterfly bush actually turns almost a shade of black this time of year so I did experiment with some cuttings- but nothing was coming together.

When I spotted a $8.99 bunch of roses at Costco, I had my idea.

these

plus

equals

A bouquet Morticia would be proud to call her own-hey, there’s that mouse!

I loved Morticia Addams when I was a kid! I was fantasying I was her as I was chopping of the flowers…now if only I can train my husband to become ravenous and suddenly French every time he sees me.

(I’ve always preferred small compact bouquets of roses over the long steam variety anyway -so I had no problem sacrificing the flowers to create this Halloween display. My little vases filled with pretty roses just went into hiding upstairs. I see it as a win/win situation).

Okay, now I do have to go. For a little more reading and viewing pleasure did you by chance see Kiki’s post this week on Color For Your Home..it’s a great rundown of her favorite Halloween color trends and more fab holiday decor ideas then you can shake your broom stick at!

Cheers! Hope your night is a Treat!
