Kodak bids farewell to Kodachrome film: Before digital cameras and Photoshop, there was slow developing color film that used to come in yellow boxes and would actually have to be manually wound into your camera- do you remember? When first introduced in 1937, Kodak’s Kodachrome film’s ability to capture movement and nuances of both color and light was so revolutionary that it truly changed the face of photojournalism and photography as we know it today. National Geographic and Kodak post a tribute to some of the most amazing images captured on this film.
Evolution in full color: Science Daily reports researchers at UC Santa Barbara believe they have zeroed in on the genes responsible for a flower species changing it’s color. Studying the shift in color of the North American Columbine flower from red ( those pollinated by hummingbirds) to predominately pale yellow and white ( those pollinated by hawkmoths), scientist now believe that they may be able to predict when evolution of change will occur. Apparently there has been 5 shifts in color of Columbines on record in the US- who knew?
Fireworks move West: In honor of the 400th Anniversary of the Hudson River-The Country’s largest firework’s display-Macy’s 4th of July spectacular- will be having a switch of venues. For the first time since 2000, the skies over the westside of Manhattan will be aglow with color this weekend- giving westsiders and Jersey residence a front row seat and leaving eastsiders and Brooklynites ulitimatly bummed. The Daily News has a great behind the scenes video of the events set up- which began 2 weeks ago- see the video here.
I’m in NYC and the fireworks are over- what do I do next? If you love the thrill of the hunt and both seeing and hearing your surroundings in an all new way, then you might like to partake in ‘We Know The Secret Of Colors”- an ambient audio tour of the lower west side of Manhattan. Starting July 5th, a project funded by the Artistic Intervention Project ( they recently did a similar audio tour of San Fran’s Golden Gate Park), will have participants walking the streets and discovering the history, art, colors and mysteries of NYC neighborhoods of SoHo, TriBeCa and beyond all while listening to a downloadable tour- guided by sound artist Jeremy Dalmas. I love a good treasure hunt- and this one sounds fun! ( Thanks to Patti Call from CMG for tuning us in to this fun event!)
Wherever you are celebrating this weekend- I wish you a happy, healthy and of course- COLORFUL Holiday!
