Growing up in a beach house in New England Julia was encouraged by her parents to express herself through art and design. She had a passion for creativity and learned to cook, sew, and paint at an early age. She painted her own bedroom as a child, drew every night while her mother cooked dinner, rearranged furniture in the house as well as created accessories for different rooms. At the young age of twelve, Julia landed her first job sewing clothes for a local boutique. It was then she knew she would make a lifelong career using her natural talent, practical skill, design and creative vision. When she was a little girl her grandparents introduced her to an artist friend of theirs who encouraged Julia all the way through high school to attend art school. She graduated with a BFA in painting from UMass in Amherst, MA and attended the Museum schools both in Boston and Worcester, MA and R.I.S.D. along the way.
At twenty three she married her next door neighbor, moved to San Francisco and pursued her career as an artist, mother, clothing designer and professional organizer, always showing her paintings in galleries throughout the Bay Area. She has gone through several transformations with her paintings and her latest paintings have been inspired by her early morning walks along the bay. She observes the water in different lights depending on the time of year. Some mornings the fog is so low that she has an etherial view of the water and she has captured that in her new pieces which are layers of paint covered with a thick coating of clear resin, mimicking the water. Her latest series of paintings are dreams, memories and seasons, all having a simple, sophisticated and elegant watery theme.
Julia makes West coast outdoor living come to life with beauty, precision and detail in her art.
She lives by the water in Mill Valley and paints in her studio in the Mission district in San Francisco. The greatest artist influences in her life have been Chuck Close, who spoke to her graduating class, leaving her with the message, “as an artist, your job is to create, work hard every day, and not behave like a temperamental artist, but a business person.” The second one was Franz Klein whose paintings flanked the doors to the museum of the School of the Worcester Art Museum. The impact that they had on her was so profound that she chose the school over all the others she was considering.
