Move over Carrie Underwood. I’ve got my own temporary home though I feel confident no one wants to hear me sing about it even in my very best off-key voice.
So here’s the skinny. After much debate, I agreed to stay at my friend’s home while she heads off to Afghanistan. Here in DC she’s an exec in Federal Law enforcement. There she will be leading some sort of an intelligence team (hey this is DC — I don’t ask too much about what many of my friends do and besides they couldn’t tell me anyway).
Yes, we’re as different as you might imagine but we’ve been friends for years. I met her when on the first day I moved into the second home I owned in DC, I locked myself out with no shoes and no cell phone.
I knocked on her door to ask to use her phone to call a locksmith and instead she just popped over to my house and in about 30 seconds had my door unlocked. I wasn’t sure if I should be thrilled or terrified that my new neighbor could get into my house that quickly but it did make us fast friends.
So fast forward 8 years. I sold my home, had not yet found a new one and she thought that this was a sign that I was suppose to stay at her house and take care of her kitty cat while she was overseas. She really wanted me to stay here, I didn’t have any real reason I couldn’t and she was extremely convincing (one of the attributes of someone who has had a career in law enforcement). So just when I thought I was going to be spending the summer at the beach and then moving to NYC she nicely twisted my arm and suggested that I really wasn’t ready to be going anywhere…at least not just yet.
What this all means is that as of today, I officially start my adventure of living on the bay just west of Washington, DC and south of Annapolis, MD for the next six months. The star below show you the general location of where I’ll be.
You might remember that I stayed here this past winter for a month while she was away for a month training for this assignment. I got snowed in…twice for four and five days respectively before I could get anyone over here to plow out her very long driveway. But that is in the past so I’m going to forget about it and simply enjoy awaking each morning to the sounds of seagulls calling, sail lines clanking, and the water lapping against the grassy shore.
It seems to have ended up being a good solution at the moment. It is just a few hours drive south to my check in on my mom and see how she is recovering from her heart surgery and I can still spend lots of time in DC. Ideally, though I want to be spending many days writing and working in the gazebo or on the sun porch right here. I’ll keep you posted.

I love serendipity like that, Kate! I am sure good things will happen, you sound like you can have fun anywhere!
What a AWESOME adventure! I look forward to hearing more about your stay in DC! : )

Kate — I am so excited for you! Sounds like a tremendous opportunity, and perfect timing. I love being near the water. My father was a big sailor, so when I am near water I feel completely at ease. Enjoy your time there and do just as you plan – enjoy a easier life, where you can read and write and anything else you please

To accomplish a sense of sustainability in a temporary abode, it helps to place a healthy Bamboo plant in this home’s Feng Shui’s Helpful People and Travel area. To find this ‘gua’ ~simply stand at the front door and looking into the home, this is section all the way to your right-front. Bamboo plants are especially fortuitous. Happy Dwelling~
Be Inspired,
Sharyn
A coastal girl … I love it! Enjoy it Kate – I can’t wait to see how coastal living will inspire your color posts.
Thanks for all the positive thoughts and good wishes. I have a feeling the six months are just going to fly by.
