It’s officially fall now, my overseas adventures and my Minnesota working vacation are over, and Trend Tuesday is BACK. I know, I know, you’re thinking…”but Kiki, it’s Wednesday!” Well ya got me there, you’ll just have to trust me when I say it was technically still Tuesday when I was writing this post
I must admit I am uber (I love that word) excited about mauve moving into the forefront of fall fashion. I’m sure many of you cringe when you think of how mauve and it’s partner dusty rose have been used in the past, but as I always say it’s the combinations you create that can make any color fresh again. And how can you not love a color that portrays beautiful images like this in nature?
I’ve been doing a lot of shopping lately, not for the sake of buying, (although I did break down and buy a pair of jeggings, 4 pairs of shoes, and, and, and…ok I got sucked in) but for me a trip to the mall is more about validation of my color forecasting skills. I was pleasantly surprised this fall. Here are a few of my favorite “new” mauve pieces I spotted.
There are many different interpretations on what exactly mauve might look like. It’s apparent that the introduction of this color follows on the coattails of the CMG 2010 Color of the Year (read more about Mardi Grape via Trend Tuesday here), and you can see the graduation of grayed purple into this dustier version of a rosy red-violet. These are some of the variations I found that can easily pass as “mauve.”
Honestly, these colors are really quite classic in one sense. Many of us ladies wear these colors everyday in eye shadow, blush, lipstick, etc and they don’t go out of style.
Aha! Had you ever thought about mauve like that before? But what does that have to do with design? Well, we like to live around those colors we look best wearing, so…you get the idea. This poor color palette has practically been shunned from the interiors world for decades and it may seem difficult to bring these hues back inside. However, if you think about how well your make-up goes with all the other colors you wear, then this should be a cinch for you! See how easy it looks in these spaces.
Ok, so this Bliss Living image is getting a little on the pink side, but we are nearing October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month so we can expect to see a little more pink out around this time of year no matter the current color trends.
So what’s your take on Mauve? Do you think we should rename Mauve, so when you talk about this color people don’t scrunch up their face, shudder, or yell out a big YUCK? If yes, got any good ideas?
*When you are trying to initially get back into a routine after being away awhile, do you ever sputter a bit? Well, it’s obvious I do since I pulled two images from my folders with no source listed, YIKES. What was I thinking?? Here at Sensational Color for Your Home we always strive to give credit where credit is due, as we would expect the same, right? So I am asking for a little assistance. If you are out there surfin the net and you happen to spot one of the two “un-sourced” images in this post, could you please leave me a note to where they came from and I will owe you one! Thanks much!

Kiki I really enjoy your Trend Tuesdays. It’s great to have U back and the many moods of mauve are lovely. I like your fresh spin:-)
Re: mauve – most woman shouldn’t wear it, but it’s soothing and elegant in interiors.
Paula, thanks for the nice welcome back! I’m so glad you liked this fresh take on mauve for the future!
Kari, I agree that fair skinned women have a hard time making mauve work. It will be interesting this fall to see how this demographic goes about wearing this color. And you are totally right about the moods that mauve emotes in interiors. Paired with grays, beiges, and metals like silver, pewter, and gold would be beautiful and soothing.
Thanks for the comments!
