Now that I have had a week to recuperate from all my crazy travels, which started well over a month ago and included the High Point show and my CMG trip to Brooklyn, I figured it’s about time I start sharing my finds and observations with all of you.
Here I am in Brooklyn during my travels, on a Scavenger Hunt for CMG. It was raining but still fun! Notice the BLUE rain jacket and scarf. Trendy all the way!
What better way to start than with the color Blue. Kate and I have been tracking this color and have given an in depth look into the influence and inspiration behind a trend we call Global Views. Check out our 2010 & 2011 report which includes 4 color trends, 6 design trends, over 25 forecasted colors, a 28 minute video and a 10 page pdf! Sign up here!
With a keen eye on the blue family and talk about every color from Turquoise to Ice to Royal, (read all about these cool blues in my past Trend Tuesday Posts: Spring Break Blue, Icy Blue is Icy Hot, and Going “Blue-Green”) it’s easy to understand how pulling in the blue family’s complement color would be an eye-catching way to freshen up a palette. This creates a beautiful, energetic, and dynamic color combination between blue and orange.
And I can’t think of anyone more inspiring or who showed off this fabulous summer color combination better than Barclay Butera at High Point just a few weeks ago. Notice how it’s not just the colors, but the coastal and nautical feel of the patterns, prints, fabrics, materials and accessories that all add to the feel of summer fun.
This was the entrance into Barclay’s showroom in the IHFC Bldg. Love how everything is so symmetrical, very classic with an updated color combo.
The touch of zebra brings a twist of safari to a setting that has a shell inspired coastal feel. The casual look of “denim” blue on the sectional creates a relaxed mood.
The tufted club chair and monogrammed pillow along with the dark navy velvet fabric evoke a gentleman’s club house feel. The golden yellow-orange is seamlessly integrated into this classic space. The silver metal frames draw the eye to the pencil drawn look of the sailboats done in grayscale to blend evenly, a unique and unexpected version of a typical nautical element.
The orange pillow are a great pop of color on this neutral sofa. Combining both the white and sand have a real beach style.
How cute are those koi fish hangings? It makes this setting look more tropical.
The silk scarf is a great addition of pattern and also brings all of the colors together. It was just gorgeous in person, wish it came across better here. Also still loving the oversized damask pattern, even though it’s been done over and over the past few years, it looks new in this yellow-orange color.
The striped chair takes many classics, the wing back chair, navy and white, and stripes and puts them all together, a brave move that works perfectly. Notice the piping on the pillow is orange with the blue, a great example of color proportion.
What did you think of the blue and orange from High Point? What were some of your favorite places you saw this color scheme popping up?

Wish I had been there to see this: just love all the color combinations. I think those sepia nautical prints are so perfect, and unusual, with the orange and deep yellow. The couch is navy? It looks chocolate brown on my screen….
I’m noticing those large Japanese paint brushes on the table: that’s an unusual touch also, and, see my blog, I show the exact same thing from a booth at Brimfield! yes, it is certainly a small (design) world, no?

Libby,
So glad you stopped by! You do have a great eye for details, love that you noticed those brushes on the table. That was a great touch. I am headed over to your blog now to check out the booth from Brimfield.
Oh and yep, that couch is Navy! Hopefully it was just the pic and not your screen. Are you calibrated? If not, I can recommend a great product for you!
