Music theme for teenage son’s bedroom

Today’s color dilemma…

“I am looking into painting my 13 year old sons bedroom he is into music and guitars. Any ideas on color would be great. Thanks” –JIM

Kate suggests…

Music and guitars can a rockin’ bedroom theme for a 13 year old so here are some thoughts on how to give him a room he’ll love and one that you’ll be happy with as well.

Often when teenage boys think about a music theme they tend to want black, white, gray with maybe some red and while this may work for album covers and stage costumes it can be unattractive and certainly unimaginative for a bedroom.

Instead if he has an average size or larger bedroom, I would chose a deep blue-gray like Valspar’s Dark Night. It is a relaxing, masculine color that can promote stability, wisdom, and harmony but still makes a statement. If the room is small I’d use this same hue but go a few steps lighter.

If your son is interested in actually playing the guitar then make it easy for him to pick it up anytime the mood strikes by installing a wall mounted hanger. Not only does it save floor space but the guitar does double duty as artwork when not in use.

An easy, inexpensive option would be to decorate the room with posters of his favorite bands. If you want to do this without framing them I’ve found the best type of poster putty to use is the one that is blue; it will hold well through climate changes and often does not do damage to the paint on the walls when removed.

But why limit the posters just to images of his idols? I love this ‘Decorating Tips for the Urban Rock Star’ from poorasdirt.com and bet any 13 year old rock star would agree:

There’s nothing like the awesome power of standing in front of a six-foot stack of speakers as you blast your screaming guitar solo to a crowd of tens of thousands. But if you live in a shoe box, don’t play an instrument, and the only speakers you have are you iPod earbuds, you can at least fake it with these wall-sized speaker posters.

“Are you ready to rock, bedroom?” (sound of fans screaming)

Of course if you are looking just to add a music themed border and accessories you might like the tan Rockstar border shown at the beginning of the post. I’d choose a paint color that is the same as the lighter color color in the background. If your room is 8′ in height, I would hang the border 3′ from the floor for the best visual effect.

You could add a rug, artwork or pillows that bring in green, brown and black as accents to the tan and gray.

Another option might be to paint the walls and then hand paint a partial silhouette of a guitar.

You could do something as simple. Here’s some inspiration from the community logo at fourthfret.com

For ideas do an image search on the Internet and look at the logos and graphics from some of the guitar sites. There are many different variations and I’m sure you can find one that fits your style and would be simple to paint.
