Today’s color dilemma…
I have a north facing room with two large dark objects– the fireplace and the tv cabinet. The room is currently painted yellow, but I think I need a more neutral wall color for selling. I will probably put up blue drapes to replace the valances. Any suggestions for a lighter, brighter color? –fishface

Kate Suggests…
Since the existing color scheme is already quite neutral I would bring out the colors in the fireplace to keep the room from feeling bland or boring. Then if you wanted to use blue as an accent it would work nicely to balance the overall look.
It seems that you have already used some of the colors from the fireplace for your valences and the pillow on the stool and the blue for accents above the fireplace. If for the walls you choose a richer beige that blends with the colors of the stone in your fireplace I think you will be even more pleased with how these elements add to the room.
Since your room has large windows and good light I don’t think you have to go too light with your paint color. Instead go for something that has broad appeal, feels warm and welcoming and makes a memorable statement to your potential buyers.

If you still feel you want to go lighter, I would still choose a color from the fireplace but instead use a tint (lighter shade) of the color.
Both of the colors I am recommending are colors I’ve used with great success in homes where the goal was resale. I hope you too have a successful, quick and profitable sale.
