On the main floor of most homes it works best to have the colors in all rooms work together. This doesn’t mean that all rooms have to be painted the same color. You can use your fabrics, accessories, and furnishings to tie the colors together.
For example in an open floor plan if you were to use several different wall colors, a great way to pull the look together is to use coordinated fabrics in pillows, drapes and table cloth.
Making a connection through color will allow the rooms to flow together beautifully

Adding black or even the currently popular dark cola brown shades help balance the color palette in just about any room. These darker colors give the eye a place to rest as it takes in all the colors present in a room.
In addition, the neutralizing qualities of the darker elements can make a room seem more spacious.
Black accessories, frames, occasional tables, appliances and many smaller items are wonderful ways to add a dark touch to a room. Look around, you may even already have these black or dark brown touches in your decor.

Your front door is the focal point of the facade of your home so it important to think of it this way. Even though the front door occupies a relatively small area in relationship to the entire home, it can make a strong statement.
Don’t be timid or simply default to black or white for this important element of you home. Finding a color that works with your exterior and trim colors is a given but you will also want to find one that works well with the colors of any brick, stone, or shingles that are visible from the front of your home.
Warm welcoming shades of red, cranberry and burgundy often work well but don’t be afraid to get creative and use colors like Sherwin-Williams Eggplant or Valspar Montpelier Palmetto Green.

Many properties are historic and have incredible details such as cornices, moldings, brackets, shutters that could greatly benefit from a touch of color. Especially in these older style homes sometimes adding a third color is all it takes to really bring a home alive.Consider the details in conjunction with the surrounding neighborhood and the style of the home. Consider the colors of the other homes in your neighborhood especially those to each side and choose a different but complementary color scheme for your home.

I have often received calls from home decorators who have painstakingly tried to find the perfect color match in fabrics or accessories to no avail. While I do appreciate their dedication to their decorating project the first thing I tell them is to stop looking. Not only is it frustrating but matching exactly tends to flatten the look of a room.
It may seem counterintuitive however blending shades and tints of similar hues adds more depth and interest to any room plus gives it a more professionally decorated appearance.
So don’t worry when you can’t find the perfect match. Simply put together colors that are visually pleasing together.

Natural wood floors add warmth and beauty to just about any room but when a wood floor can’t stand up to another sanding I often recommend painting it.

Farrow & Ball make paint specifically formulated for floors, which comes in more than 100 colors. Their eggshell finish covers in one coat, is washable, and impervious to scuffs from furniture. For more information and to see the colors visit the Farrow & Ball website…

Use color to divert attention away from an awkward or unattractive area in a room. For example if your view is less than attractive you can take the attention away from the window and into another part of the room by painting a wall in a bright or unexpected color. You could also strategically place a vivid poster or boldly colored wall hanging to draw the eye to another part of the room. Our eyes are naturally attracted to bold pops of color.
