Color for Your Home

30th August: Today's Tips

Kate on Color:

On the main floor of most homes it works best to have the colors in all rooms work together. This doesn't mean that all rooms have to be painted the same color. You can use your fabrics, accessories, and furnishings to tie the colors together. Read On »

Dorothy Draper colors

Today’s color dilemma…

I’ve been reading about Dorothy Draper but most of the pictures are in black and white. Can you give me some examples of the colors she actually used? I’d like to decorate my apartment in bold colors and thought her palette could inspire me. Thanks, Riley K.

Kate suggests…

Benjamin Moore put together a special palette of their colors that captured the style of Dorothy Draper a year or two ago for a museum retrospective show. Here are the colors they included:

Dorothy Draper was the Grand Dame of using bright, bold color and texture combinations in her day and thought to be quite outlandish. While they are bold by today’s standards these colors don’t seem all that unusual.

Martha Stewart Colors

Martha Stewart remains a decorating favorite because she instructs us on how to make everything in our home more beautiful.

She has taken the same approach with her paint line. Unlike most paint sample cards that include a single color or several shades or tints of the same color, Martha’s color swatches include stripes of two coordinating paint colors that would work well with the main color.

House Beautiful Color Institute

Last week the House Beautiful Color Institute launched at the Washington Design Center.

Stephen Drucker, editor in chief of House Beautiful magazine, was joined by top design professionals and I was honored to have been included in such a wonderful event.

With his unending wit and charm Drucker opened the event. “Paint is like sex,” he said, speaking to an overflow crowd. “There is an endless fascination with the subject.”

And fascination there was as readers had an opportunity to mix and mingle and talk color. It was a day of ideas and inspiration for all who were there.

Next stop Chicago. Please join me at the House Beautiful Color Institute on May 7th.

I hope to see you there! More information is availble at The Merchandise Mart Design Center.

Courageous With Color

I was recently interviewed by Elaine Rogers and featured in her article ‘Courageous With Color’ that appears in this month’s issue of Solutions At Home Magazine. Thanks Elaine!

From Courgeaous With Color–

As the Earth sleeps, blanketed by the travails of icy weather, we alternately bundle up and hunker down — awakening to shivers and daily doses of brittle air, blustering winds, brutal temperatures and barren landscapes. Dark skies and hard rains also dampen spirits, causing mudrooms to fill with wet boots and overcoats as gloves and hats sporadically adorn every part of the house.

Rather than waiting for the clouds to part, ward off bleak, colorless days and the sense of “blah” that gloomy weather inspires with interiors awash in vibrant hues, taking refuge in bright spaces designed to lift moods faster than a warm, spring day.

Psychologists and color designers say color is one of the biggest influences on the human state of mind and our language regularly references the emotive connection. After all, we “see red,” we’re “green with envy” and we feel “peachy.”

Disregarding color trends and surrounding yourself with favorite, feel-good shades creates rooms guaranteed to lift your spirits. Pictured: walls painted in Sherwin-Williams’ “Blackberry.”

Martha Stewart paint colors please

valspar_marthastewart.jpgToday’s color dilemma…

I used to buy Martha Stewart paint at my local paint store but they no longer carry this line. Any idea where I can buy it now?– Barb J.

Kate suggests…

Yes, I know exactly where you can find it.

The Martha Stewart Colors paint line is now available exclusively at Lowe’s.

Martha Stewart Colors features 350 colors and includes an exceptionally large selection of tinted whites to provide a luminous complement to the more vibrant paint colors in her beautifully coordinated palette.

Each sample shows suggestions for two coordinating colors making it easy to develop a color scheme that is picture perfect and as Martha might say “That’s a good thing.”

Find out more about Martha Stewart Colors in this video plus find out which are Martha’s favorite colors…
