Today’s decorating dilemma: I need a little guidance, I am renovating a Katrina damaged home,. It is taking a long time and I want everything perfect, or as much as it can be.
I have a town home, living room, and kitchen run together, maple cabinets with a mocha stain, so the cabinets are basically almond with a little color, I am using teak, hand scraped floors throughout, not much light, just a large set of french doors leading to patio, and a small garden window in kitchen, I was thinking black galaxy granite, little spec of bronze, its beautiful, and oil rubbed chandeliers and faucets. Soooo, what color do I paint, or should I change something? please help! –Sharon

It sounds like what you have is generally dark so I am envisioning a scheme with lots of contrast. Something light and airy, since you don’t have much natural light coming in.
Since you indicate you are going with some deeper, dramatic shades of wood and incorporating black (which makes a strong statement) I would suggest a light tan/beige color for the walls, such as Sherwin Williams 6092 Lightweight Beige.

Really study the nuances of the colors that you already have…what direction are they going in? More towards yellow or warmer tones or more towards blue and cooler tones?
It is the consistency with the undertones of the colors in your room that will give you a unified look.
Illustrious Bronze #40013 from Valspar, can be used as a reference color or to splash on an accent wall in one of the adjoining rooms to carry out the bronze theme.
Because this palette is neutral you may want to incorporate one other bold, fun accent color you are drawn to such as a Rose, or Lime Green to add interest.
Embellish the bronze in the granite by repeating it with canisters, salt & pepper shakers, or some other dazzling, decorative centerpiece for the dining room table.

Thank you so much for answering my email. Although, I have already started painting and decided to use Shaker beige by benjamin moore for the walls, I hope I didn’t make a mistake, and panda white for the ceiling. I have this sort of trey in the kitchen, but it is really more like a box,, how should I paint that. The kitchen cabinets are maple, very lite, and the stain in the seams is a brown., I am so glad to have someone to talk to about this.. I just want it to be right, after loosing my home of 25 years and everything in it. I want something new, and something I can call home again. Can I send you pics of my house? will that be helpful? I really don’t have money in my budget for a decorator, that is why I am so grateful for your help. No one has ever answered any blog that I have entered.
Thanks again
by the way I love the golds, and reds.
Hi Sharon,
I can’t imagine losing everything and can only imagine how much it means to you to be designing your new home in a way that looks and feels perfect for you. I’m glad we add our thoughts as you go through the process.
While we do recommend colors it is more to get you thinking in a particular direction and not that the color we show is the one or only color to consider.
I think that Shaker Beige is a very good choice. I have recommended that color many times and I think it will work very nicely with your oiled bronze fixtures.
I am happy we can be a sounding board for you decorating project. You can send photos to me or you may find it easier to upload them to roomvues.com and then let me know they are there. That way not only will we comment here on the blog but you may receive thoughts from other decorators and DIYers too.
We’ll look forward to seeing your home and helping you decorate. ~Kate
thank again for the reply, yo have no idea how much I look forward to them. I just heard from the cabinet maker, and he will be installing my kitchen cabinets today, and says that the stain in the cabinets might be a little darker than I had expected. so lets keep our fingers crossed,, I will try to take pictures as soon as they are installed,, thank you so much

Goodmorning Sharon!
You seem to be taking off with your project!! Sounds good so far, I look forward to seeing the pictures and helping you out further. Have you already selected knobs for your cabinets? Maybe you can do them in a bronze finish. You can also incorporate the reds and golds (maybe more of a matte gold) in the accents.
Have fun today, watching your kitchen come together!!
Hi. I am trying to locate the paint that you recommended Valspar: Illustrious Bronze #40013 and am having trouble locating it. Valspar doesn’t display it. in their product line up. Do you have any suggestions? I appreciate your help.
Many thanks,
Dawn
