Birthstone for December: Blue Topaz

December is  a very festive and colorful month full of celebrations.  Let's not forget it is also a frosty and chilly month as well.

If you are born in this special month you also have a very special birthstone - Blue Topaz.  A perfect color of icy blue, it is reminiscent of the icicles one may find on a cold December morning.

Ancient civilizations believed in this stones cooling properties. Named from the Sanskrit word 'tapas' - meaning 'fire' it was used to not only cool down a pot of boiling water but to cool hot tempers as well!

Topaz comes in many hues. The subtle to intense variations of December's blue topaz: Sky, Swiss, and London are all obtained by heat treating - whether naturally or  engineered.

A gift of blue topaz symbolizes love and fidelity.

This topaz ring is one of my favorite designs - 'Thorn Branch' ring it is cast from a rose branch in sterlind silver and set with a faceted round sky blue topaz.  A perfect gift to 'warm' the heart of someone near and dear.

Fashion Color Trend: The New Nudes

runway looks from Rodarte, Prada and Max Azira from Style.com

No longer designated to staple classics like pants and trenches, khaki, stone and ecru along with modern day fleshy pinks and champagne creams, are making their way as the it color for sophisticated day and edgy evening wear.

A bevy of glamorous starlets rocked the look at this year's Oscars ceremony.  I always say you can gauge the strength of an upcoming color trend by how many stars begin wearing it during the winter award season- looks like this one's a keeper!

Yet anyone who loves these sexy pale tones can tell you, it's not always easy getting it right. Depending on your hair, eye and skin color certain pales will flatter while others have you looking all washed up. So before you spend one pale penny, make sure to test-drive a few different shades in the dressing room to determine which one is your personal best. (Preferably in a mirror with the best day-lighting possible, please).

Keep in mind that the layering and the varying of textures can make these colors their most exciting. The starlet's dresses above all have a sparkly finish. That's why they all look so fantastic in monochromatic versions of these shades. A shimmer effect (like a metallic) is the best bet to keeping nudes from going 'drab' when not surrounded by other colors.

Otherwise it's best to balance out nude colors with like (other nudes) or unlike (bright or saturated) colors.

these images from J.Crew are a great example of mixing nudes

Notice how the girl on the left has on a pinker- tone nude, the grayish/silver shirt, rosy makeup and darker khaki shorts balances out her coloring.

While the girl on the right's beautiful darker skin tone is super pretty in a nude that has a peachier finish. Her gold jewelry, pure white jeans and coral colored makeup balance her out. Neither look washed out- right!

If you do find yourself feeling a bit 'drained' in a nude top or bottom you already own and love (guilty as charged) simply adding a dash of a color you know you look great in can help... thank goodness scarves, statement necklaces and chunky earrings are so in fashion right now as they can be a lifesaver in cases like this.

Or consider buying a new 'nude' (perhaps one with a shimmery finish) to layer with it.... this may help breath some new life into that existing piece that is hanging in your closet and just dying to be worn!

Styling these pale shades within a color-filled outfit is a savvy way to transition this summer trend into fall.  Paired with icy pastels or blue jean and classic neutrals like gray, black and navy- pale pieces can continue to be a fresh addition in your wardrobe.

Nude inspired faces are also on trend and were seen on this year's runways.  Slightly stained lips and cheeks looks oh-so fresh.  Again let your coloring help you to decide which shades are best for you.

For day, fair complexions tend to look prettiest in pink. Adding a heavy lined lid and a dusting of a shimmery high lightening powder takes this almost  'nude' face into evening. Darker skin basks in the glow of sheer orange and corals- how cute are her freckles peeking through her light handed makeup!

While at night a frosty, iridescent shimmer is my absolute favorite for everyone! Notice her practically nude eyelashes- yes, this is a trend too (and a very modern one at that!)

You may noticed that all three model's cheekbones are clearly defined and appear to be almost the same color as their lips.  This to me is key- as it gives you the freedom to wear a nude inspired face with light, bright and dark colors clothes.

Some good tricks of the trade.. Kevyn Aucoin's flesh toned lip pencil ($24), sculpting powder ($42- it's the one mega-makeup-artist Pat McGrath used on the runway this season) and liquid Cyber Gloss ($27) for a sheer colored lip with a little added sparkle-are all safe bet and can be picked up your local Sephora.

Nude colored sandals and heels are a must for anyone wanting to elongate their legs this season. The same rules apply so pick a shade that best compliments your legs natural coloring.  Oh Pucci, why do you taunt me so? ($580 from Piperlime.com- I'm a size 8 in case anyone cares).

Now what's on my list to update on the cheap? A nude lip pencil and a nude lip color for sure. I will be trying that sculpting powder, would love to say a nude colored exotic skin clutch and a satin-y and sexy pale hued Grecian wrap dress and a... oh who am I kidding-it's just so not happening!  So realistically I'm liking:

A new tote- the color and shape of this one from The Gap ( $34.50) is super cute and I think would make an unexpected foil to the brighter shades that already exist in my summer wardrobe.

A pair of nude sandals. These Micheal Kor's pair from Intermixonline.com ( $298) are worth every penny because they can multitask throughout my daytime wardrobe. It's hard to see in this pix but the cording on the platform is jute with a metallic silver threading- so I'm guessing they have a nice little sparkle in the sun!

And most definitely- nude colored nail polish for my tootsies like this lovely shade 'Cocoa' from Creative Nail Design- I'm in love with the idea of nude colored nails and this opaque version from CND is sure to be one of the hottest colors of the season- plus at less than $10 bucks a bottle it's by far the easiest (and budget friendliest) ways to be colorfully on trend all year long!

Birthstone for November: Topaz

If your birthday falls in the chilly month of November you can seek warmth in your beautiful birthstone Topaz. The most common colors of the crystal are a rich, deep hue similar to maple syrup, clover honey or a fine golden tequila making Topaz such a delicious and delightful stone.

It also comes in a gorgeous peach color called 'Imperial' Topaz (one of my favorite stones). It can also be found in a stunning pink- but this is very rare.

Topaz represents friendship and trust. It is the one of the hardest minerals in nature and it's large crystal formations exceed most other crystals in size, resulting in big beautiful specimens for cutting into pendants and rings.

Did anyone have a Mercury Topaz back in the day?

Or spot one of these sweet little hummingbirds called Crimson Topaz?

Truly tantalizing, titallating and timeless - Topaz is tops!

Birthstone for October: Opal

Opal is one of my all time favorite gems. As valuable as ruby and emerald but worlds apart in appearance. Opals are an entity all there own, no other stone is quite like it.

Australia is a special place, a continent filled with many of God's most unique creations. The Duck-Billed Platypus, Koala Bear, Kangaroo and Tasmanian Devil, as well the coveted Black, Light and Milk opals, can be found only in the 'land down under.'

The indigenous Aboriginal people of Australia have a beautiful legend about how this mystical gem came to their land. The creator came down to Earth on a rainbow. This voyage was to bring the message of peace on earth to all humans. The very spot where his foot first touched down suddenly became alive, and the earth was glowing with all the colors of the rainbow.

Millions of years ago when most of Australia was covered with a vast inland sea, opals were created within lava rock. A prehistoric combination of fine quartz rock [silica] and water is the basic recipe for this beauty. The water within the stone is what makes it's appearance so distinct. When opals are hit with light, the thin layers of fractured rock and water sends off a rainbow of colors." Due to the high water content, about 6%, opals can become brittle and lose some of it's flash and fire. Dry climates and indoor heating are major culprits. The humidity in the air and moisture from your skin is what this gemstone loves.

Good luck or bad luck? Historically it is one of the most controversial gem. For many centuries it was a highly revered stone. The ancient Greeks called it opallios, meaning "to see a change in color." They believed it gave foresight and prophecy. Roman philosophers extolled about it's beauty and it was thought to bring purity and hope. To the Arabs it was sacred and thought to make it's 'true' owner invisible, it became a popular stone among thieves! Fair maidens wore it in their hair to protect it's color.

Opals first stroke of bad luck came during the Plague. People noticed that the stone's 'fire' was brightest just before death. People saw it as an omen, that the stone was the cause rather than the symptom. Opal is very sensitive to heat, the high fever in the victim's final days caused the luster of the stone to glow stronger.

If this wasn't bad enough, Sir Walter Scott's novel about the fictional character Anne of Geierstein only made it worse. The stone was portrayed as evil, and changed color with her moods: red when she was angry, blue when sad, and green when happy, then fading to an ashen gray when she died.

Superstitions were hard to shake. Only after Queen Victoria fell in love with their beauty did people consider wearing them again. She gave them as gifts to her children and soon after their popularity was on the rise again.

Later the subdued beauty of Deco jewelry showcased opal perfectly. It complimented enamel and were used together often in decorative pieces.

Since, it has been used in countless designs. I am especially fond of Cartier's emerald, opal and diamond bracelet featured in this months W magazine. Shakespeare described opal as the 'queen of gems', it made sense then and is true again today.

Would Dorothy's shoes have been as powerful if they were lemon yellow? I think not.

Snow White's lips against her "skin as white as snow" wouldn't have excited the imagination as much if they were petal pink.

Ruby, the bold and beautiful birthstone of July is truly iconic. The ancient Hindus called it "Rajnapura" meaning King of Gems.

With its deep red color it evokes love and passion. Ancient cultures believed it's warmth and luminosity came from an internal flame, similar to the passions of the heart; making it a perfect gift for lovers since it's discovery over 2,000 years ago.

Part of the family of minerals called corundum - which encompasses all sapphires. It is only separated from other sapphires by it's color. A green sapphire is an emerald and a red is a ruby. It is considered one of the four precious gemstones, together with diamond, emerald, and sapphire.

ruby_gemstone_at_the_open_air_market_in_mogok_myanmar_burma.jpg

In an area called Mogok in Burma the earth is rich with the most beautiful red rubies. With a deep purple red it is called "pigeon's blood." Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and recently Kenya also bear rubies. With any purchase of a gem quality stone there are many things to consider. One very important question being- are they conflict free? Currently the dictatorial regime in Myanmar [Burma] makes conditions for the miners unsafe. Recently Tiffany's and many other jewelers have banned the use of Burmese rubies until conditions improve.

If looking to buy a Ruby for yourself or a loved one, choose from other sources where the rubies are just as gorgeous and do not bear the mark of human suffering. If you are lucky enough to have rubies as a family heirloom, wearing them is most certainly "conflict free." My dear friend Laura inherited her grandmother's ruby ring and earrings. Grandma Fran's birthday was in July. Her grandfather "Bud" was a New York Yankee who in the 1940's helped win 4 World Series! He clearly had his "eye on the ball" when it came to giving delightful tokens of love. Birthdays, Valentines and their 40th anniversary were all celebrated with rubies.

Color Maven Julie also has rubies on her finger. Bright, clear rubies are hugging each side of a diamond in her engagement ring. Her husband Tony knew the power of rubies everlasting love. They are also the perfect color stone to compliment Julies fair complexion and red hair.

I designed this big beauty using a large cabochon cut ruby. Obviously rubies come in a wide range of quality. This piece is opaque and not "gem" quality. It is from India and galaxies away from the two beauties above, however; it is still a fun everyday ring at an affordable price.

I feel like a queen in my king of a gem.
